How soon can vinyl decals be placed on catalyzed new paint? I don't want to get in a hurry.

Johnny,

Here's some general guidelines on vinyl decal installation. I believe the 60 days mentioned is probably for uncatalyzed enamels. In any event, when I did mine, I wanted to clear over them and had no intention of removing them later. The paint was acrylic urethane (necessarily catalyzed). I wanted to maintain a chemical bond with the clear (to be applied after the decals). To stay within the clearing window (1 week for the particular paint I used), I applied the decals two days after the color and cleared that same day. That was several years ago and absolutely no problems have shown up. The tractor is outside 24/7/365. I personally think the vinyl decals have a better appearance with a clear over them. The edges of the thicker vinyl decals are smoothed and "blended" into the surrounding paint that way. It gives the decal more of a painted-on appearance as well as providing a measure of physical protection. At least I think so.

Thanks. I am doing a 41 jd "h" so the hood is the main area where your idea of clear would be. But, the grills amd medallion would need to be done, too. Would there be a noticable difference if the frame was not done with clear? Thanks.

If it were mine, I'd plan on clearing all the smooth sheetmetal, even where there are no decals, just to assure there would be no difference in appearance. That's what I did.

All paints , catylized or not , cure at different rates. A good rule of thumb (no pun intended) in to use the ole thumb print method. (in an inconspicious area) If you can print it , don't decal it yet. Clear/no clear areas shouldn't look any different if sprayed the same. As far as clearing over decals , Rod has had good luck , I myself wouldn't do it. I don't believe paint is designed to adhere to a glossy vinyl finish and I also believe that a vinyl decal will shrink and expand in the sun/shade at a greater rate than clear coat does and therefore will eventually delaminate. Besides , it sounds like you have already painted it and are waiting to put on the decals. If you are going to clear coat , it has to be soon after you paint (window) (wet on wet) to chemically adhere. Also depending on your clearing experiences , those decal edges can very easily cause a perfect place for a run to start. That clear will react (flow) differently on that slick decal than on the other paint. Just a few things to think about before you decide which way to go. Personally , I think it's a lot to worry about for the minimal gains you may get.JMHO.
