THE NEW 404 MOTOR WAS COMPLETED LAST MONTH,ON THE WAY HOME IT DID THE SIMILAR SMOKE THING WITH RATTLING TOO,AND BLOWN OUT MANIFOLD GASKETS,I REPLACED THE TURBO AND HAVENT SEEN ANY SMOKE SINCE ,BUT THEN AGAIN I'VE BEEN LETTING THE TRACTOR SET AND IDLE FROM TIME TO TIME,WHILE GETTING THE ALTERNATOR,BATTERIES,AND STARTER REWORKED ,WELL FRIDAY AFTERNOON,I TOOK MY BUDDY DOWN THE BLOCK FOR A RIDE,AFTER A FEW MINUTES IT STARTED SMOKING BADLY,THE REBUILDER TOLD ME THAT WHEN THE 1ST TURBO WENT OUT,A LOT OF OIL WAS SPIT UP INTO THE MUFFLER AND BURNED TO TAR LOOKING BLACKNESS,AND SOME MAY STILL BE TRAPPED IN THE AFTERCOOLER,THATS WHATS CAUSING THE SMOKE NOW HE SAYS,I REALLY NOTICE IT A LOT WHEN I LET OFF THE THROTTLE,
WHAT IS THE CHANCE THAT THIS IS TRUE?SHOULD I RUN IT AND LET IT GET THRU BURNING OUT THIS LEFTOVER TARRY LOOKING OIL?I'M TOLD BY 2 DIESEL MECHANICS THAT IT WILL BLOW AND BURN OUT,.1 SAYS IT NEEDS TO GET IN A FIELD AND RAN TO FINISH SEATING THE RINGS CAUSE THERES OIL BLOWING PAST THEM ALSO,THANKS,
guys sorry for the capital letters, but i'm not meaning to shout at nobody, just need help

You said that the motor was rebuilt. But the rebuilder did not use new pistons or have the turbo rebuilt I wonder what else he did not replace. Valve Guides, valve seals, liners? Not tring to be critial but been building diesels for 30 years and it sounds like a patch job not a rebuild.

how much do you have to weigh to qualify for a 'large' John Deere guy?

Overhauled a 3020 in the late 80's,did the same thing.Ended up that one of the pistons didn't have the oil return holes in it. Hope thats not your problem.

If you are going to shout, you might as well do it on the JD forum.

I'm not a kid -- this is the paint forum, I thought perhaps you thought were on the JD forum. I have done the same thing, except I don't shout, capitals probably do more harm than good.

CNKS , once he cools down about his engine , I'm sure he will reallize he is in the wrong room. Maybe he just wanted to let off steam. Painters make excellent targets. We're so laid back and all. I would think,if the engine man was worth his salt,he would have ran this tractor through it's paces and made sure it ran clean and strong BEFORE returning it to the customer and then blaming it on this or that. Don't anyone test run their work anymore?
