Hello Mark,

You only have to use a clear coat if you use a two stage basecoat/clearcoat system as currently used on most automobiles. Clearcoating a single stage paint is optional. Most will argue it's unnecessary and it would be in most cases. Any type of automotive paint you use should be applied in successive coats with only a short dwell time in between unless you want to sand between coats. That dwell time is typically 15 minutes or so. Adding more coats at a later time, say days later, w/o sanding will not provide good adhesion between the coats. That's true whether or not a hardener is used.

Rod is correct about the clear coating. As long as you aren't painting any metallics etc , you won't need it. The first time you find yourself painting silver met. single stage on anything will probably be your last. Then you will go BC/CC. I use it on virtually everything but that's just what I do.Glad to see another farm equip. painter on board.Best of luck.
