wanting to paint farmall m sheet metel. the parts arnt rusted. what is the first thing to do.

yep.. good advice. Can't go wrong with stripping as far as possible.

The more sanding and wire wheeling you do.. the better the finish.. etc.

You probably can't tell if there is rust underneath until you remove the old paint, the previous owner probably painted over it. I strip all of mine and then remove the rust, usually by sanding or with an abrasive fiber wheel.

If it ain't rusted then it's been repainted at some time or other. If you are going to do it right then take it to metal first. If you just want to quick spiff it up then sand with 400 wet paper and paint it.
