I"m repainting a repaired fiberglass hood at work. The guy who did the repair said I should prime with a good epoxy primer/sealer. I went out and picked up some PPG Delstar white epoxy primer, and the required catalyst. I sprayed the hood, and 4 hours later, it was still a little soft. My fingerprints would transfer if I pressed down, and I left a fingernail impression easily. About how long does it take this stuff to set up for sanding and base coating? Thanks!
P.S., I mixed the primer exactly according to directions, and the ambient air temp was about 65 degrees.

I agree fully with B----. Can you be more specific regarding the exact product you used? Delstar is not an epoxy. If you used a PPG product like the OMNI MP EPOXY or DPLF EPOXY series, was the required induction period followed? How many coats were applied and what was the flash time between them? Did you use any other additive besides the specified catalyst? I have used both of those PPG automotive epoxies for years and have never had such a drying delay that you mention, even with colder temperatures than 65F. Something appears to be basically wrong with your application but I don't know what it might be.

Well, it was DPLF epoxy. I don't know a whole lot yet about painting, just enough, it seems, to get myself in trouble. I mixed it with the proper catalyst, applied two coats with about 5 min. flash time in between, and that was it. no other additives. I ended up using two gallons of laquer thinner to remove it all today, re-primed with a good high-build sandable primer, applied the base coat, and some pin-stripes. Tomorrow morning i'm going to clear-coat it. It camo out just fine, and I don't think I'm gonna use the epoxy anymore. I'm just starting out painting, doing it for my company to save them some money, and because I like doing it. I've painted a few hoods, and one tractor, and so far I think I'm alright, though I notice every flaw in the paint, and agonize over it. Anyway, thanks for the help!

I don't believe what you used is what he meant when he said epoxy primer. I believe what he meant was (in PPG) either Omni mp 170 epoxy or PPG DPLF epoxy primer. They are both excellent for adhesion. Neither one is to be sanded. They are NOT a build primer or a primer surfacer. Neither one will be soft after 4 hrs if applied correctly. You spray your surfacer , if needed , on top of the epoxy in the re-coat time window suggested in the inst. Then sand it smooth and then you can use the epoxy as a sealer (non-sanding) right before top coating. The product you used , I have never heard of. Delstar is PPG's acrylic enamel line so I don't know how it can be acrylic enamel and epoxy at the same time.
