Spray gun problem

I have a project out in the shop that will never see sunshine, nor outdoors, so I'm trying to paint it with an alkyd enamal. I'm using an air-sprayer with a 1.7 tip and can't get it to spray. The paint is about 60 degrees and I varied the at-gun airpressure between 45 - 55 psi, but can't get it to siphon up the paint. I went against the instructions (do not thin) and did thin it a bit, but still no spray. Do you have any advice as to what I'm not doing right?

I agree with the others...

Mix up a little pain in a paper cup.. thin it some and see if she sprays. I buy cheapy TSC BPS paint and always thin it with some naptha to get it to spray good. ( not too much! ).

You have to be real good about cleaning the gun. Even my el-cheapo 9$ chinese gun ( makes a bit of overspray ).. I clean it for 10 minutes till it blows naptha out clear on a paper towel.. then i wip down the cup inside and out, and take a toothbrush to the tip wile blowing MS or naptha thru it to remove buildup.

If ya don't clean it.. it's gonna be plugged up.

try putting just thinner in the gun and see if it will spray. if it doesnt, the gun is definately plugged up like cnks said. check the air tube also if it is a siphon gun to see if it is open. the "old school" way to do this is put a rag over the gun tip to block off the air flow and with thinner in the gun, turn it upside down and pull the trigger. it will pressurize the cup and force thinner out the vent hole. just give it a quick pull, dont lay in to it. i usually thin the alkyd 10% for better results. if you can spray thinner thru the gun, you may need to thin the paint some.

I assume it is a conventional siphon feed automotive spray gun. I use HVLP, and know little about those guns. But, your air pressure seems about right, could even be low, depending on the gun. You could have the fluid control shut off, otherwise it is plugged somewhere inside. You need to completely disassemble it and clean it with paint thinner. Blow out all passages with compressed air afterward. If your gun happens to be gravity feed HVLP (you used the word siphon) do not exceed the pressure marked which could be as little as 25 or as much as 55 psi. If it is HVLP, your tip is too big for topcoats, should be 1.3-1.5 mm.
