I found out all black paint is not black. alot of it is a more grey black. I found some jet black paint at a auto paint store, but it needed hardener, for over 100.00 a qt. Does anyone know of a paint that is pure black and retains a good shine, that no hardener is needed. Stan

Hi Stan,

DuPont's Centari acrylic enamel has a nice black that can be used w/o a hardener. The code number is 99A and the name is "Pitch Black". Centari can be field-mixed three different ways. To use w/o a hardener, you'd want to use the Ultra 1K mix. The tech sheet for that is here. It's not cheap as acrylic enamels go but you should be able to get it for around $30 a quart. Here's what it looks like - click on the thumbnail for a full-sized view:

Stan,

Yes, I use an optional hardener when I use acrylic enamel - but I also have a fresh air respirator system. Due to the special health risks of isocyanates in hardeners, I don't recommend their use to those w/o a fresh air system. The same health risks also apply to the urethanes and clearcoats, where isocyanate-containing additives are usually mandatory instead of optional. If you want to use modern paint chemistries, you should obtain a fresh air respirator system. You'll have many more (and better) available paint choices that can be used safely.
