I am painting a hood, grill, flywheel cover for a customer of mine in the morning, and he insists that I use JD paint on it. Now my question. Do I mix 4:1 (paint-hardner)?
How does JD paint buff?
We have a binks downdraft, so I am not expecting to buff, but I am used to Base Clear, so I don't know how to expect this paint to flow out.
Any advice would be much apreciated.
Thanks for looking
Adam

Since it IS low priced paint , please spray a test panel BEFORE spraying his parts. This will answer ALL your questions AND give you some practice with this particular product. I spray base/clear too , but cut my teeth on this "old" stuff back in late '60,s. Don't know anything about synthetic enamel with hardeners. To me it is an "oxy-moron". A turd is a turd no matter how you dress it up. Good luck.

Hey Adam dont know how far you are going with the prep on these parts. I always prime- block with 320-metal glaze or spot putty- prime- block- and then seal it with PPG DP50LF or PPG's off brand Shopline JP375- same as OMNI. As for buffing I believe you said you were shooting in a booth, but did not state if it had a bake system. If you dont have a bake system, I wait 48 hours before I wet sand and buff, but then I shoot W/O a booth and in floor heat at 70 degrees. I have no air movement at all after the paint has set up to a touch. So it is my belief that the spirits in this type paint are somewhat trapped, thus keeping the paint a little soft. If I wet sand and buff it is usually 1500 to 2000 to 3000 and buff it works up to a nice finish but why go through all that work for 40 dollar a gallon paint that wont last but a year. Take your time on the paint and save the greif of going through the whole sand and buff thing or you will end up with more labor than it is worth.

I usually 7:1:1 on the first coat and reduce it to 5:1:1 on the next two coats. I allow about 20 minutes between coats. I have had no known problems, lays out nice with no peel, nice glossy finish, You have to remember that it is cheap paint, so dont't expect it to hold up for more than about a year before it begins to fade out and dull. Some of these other guys will give their mixtures as well. So hang in there for a bit. CNKS or B shoot a lot more of the stuff than I do.
