I picked up a gallon of Case Flambeau Orange on clearance for $20 and planned on using it but then found this site for Acrylic Enamel. I got the paint the same week and the color appears to be dead on. I haven't shot any yet but I think this will work better than the TSC paint... at least according to a friend who has an automobile restoration shop.

third party image

This magrix cone seeder is painted in BPS IH red.

I've used it to spread both seed and fertalizer in the last couple years.. paint is holding up just fine..

I just finished A WD-45 with AC orange with the valspare paint. The tractor looks good and it is not all original tractor so I thought this would be a good experiment. This tractor only has working value. The paint has good gloss, seems hard it had good adhesion to its valspare primer, but it definitly is the wrong color.I usually use Nason but I had to try the valspare. In the future I will use Nason with my better tractors. PS I love tractors but I'm not a painter.

A name brand base coat-clear coat will outperform single component paint with hardener. After acknowledging that, I have to add that I have painted equipment and tractors with Valspar paints from different sources, i.e. TSC. I have a Ferguson back Blade painted red with hardener and correct reducer painted in the late 1970's that has always sat outside and is still bright with almost no fading, likewise for a Ford 8N painted 12 years ago. The red is holding up better than the gray bought from the New Holland dealer. If you want a top finish for a show item, and you are going to treat the item well go with a base coat clear coat. On the other hand, The Valspar products are good value for the price.

My experience has been that the TSC paint doesn't hold up and also fades.
On my Farmalls, I use IH-2150. Costs more than TSC but a much better deal in the long run.

Dave: How does your IH2150 paint look? I painted a Super C last summer with it but the paint has an orange tint to it. In my eyes it is not a true IH red. Was told it would darken if I left the tractor sit out in the sun, but it never did darken up any.

I've never encountered this problem with 2150. Looks great, like a Farmall. However, the first time I painted the Super C, quite a few years ago, we used TSC paint and it appeared "orangish" and one person even asked if we had mixed some A-C orange in with it.

I bough some paint from TSC before. my sister works there, so I get 15% off.. I figured it HAD to be worth it.. BUT, it wasn"t.. after all the work of painting it all, it was flaking off and faded in less then two months.. if you have a ACE hardware close by, get paint from there.. cheap AND good.. I paited tractors and rakes with it.. and was so happy with it I painted my truck with it.. not as good as the $100 a quart paint, but still good enough.. just my .02 worth Tim

Unfortunately.. if you had paint flaking off in less than 2 months.. you can't blame the paint.. you can only blame the painter.

yes.. TSC paint is the cheap stuff.. however.. blaming cheap paint for inadequate prep is not the answer.

I got a barn full of cheap painted tractors. if they stay outta the sun mostly, and you put a good ag wax on them. the paint lasts.. i've got 6 years on some of them.. others paint jobs are not as old.

You can look at it like this; If you were a mechanic would you buy your tools from Wal-Mart or a company that offers a more reliable tool. The same holds true with paint. You can get the cheap stuff to flow out good and look good, but it is not going to hold up over time like a quality paint. Depending what you are going to do with the painted item (eg. sell, use daily, parade)should point you in the direction you want to go. If you bought a high priced restored tractor and the paint went flat in a year would you be pleased? something to think about

...like ORS said, it all depends on how you plan to use your tractor. i agree that if you're making a show tractor, you might wanna spend the money on some high quality paint and painting equipment, but if you're gonna hook your bush-hog to it and start cutting briars brambles and small trees, you're gonna be sick at the end of the day when your high dollar paint looks like carrie underwood caught you cheating on her. valspar paints, sold by TSC, can be a fairly inexpensive way to put a decent enamal finish on your "working tractor". you can even add a hardener to it, and later if you need a touch up you can buy your color in a rattle can.

i know this is gonna start the usual arguments between us "paint hacks" and the "high quality finishers" on this forum, but that is not my intention. there is a place for all kinds of paint and techniques...one to fit everyone's situation. make your own decision based on how you plan to use your tractor.

Agree with you all 100%. At least he didn't start out his post by asking "what's the best paint to put on my~~~```~``~~~. It's that "best" word that starts most of the "discussions". The wording of a question has everything to do with the resulting answer/arguement. He asked the right question and he got the right answers. Ain't life simple??
