My project is to clean and repaint the frame on a 20' implement trailer. The frame consists of some tubing and some channel. My first step is going to be wire brushing everything with a wire cup on a small grinder. I did a few smaller areas last year and used Rustoleum Rusty Metal Primer, just brushed on. Should I use the primer that turns black or purple (I don't know the name of it.) when it comes in contact with rust? Then put the Rustoleum primer on top of that? Or just use one of them? Will I need to clean the metal before applying the primer? Is so, with what? I plan to use a spray gun for easier and better access to the tight areas. So in some areas there will be primer where there was no cleaning. How effective will the repainting be in these areas? Thanks for your help.

Hey Tree Farmer,
I agree with Circus. In my area, I had my similar trailer sand blasted for $200. After that much prep-work wire wheeling it, that money will feel well-spent, and it sure looks nice coming back all naked steel. I used PPG Omni epoxy primer and paint, and my trailer looks brand-spanking new and matches my truck. I don't plan on doing that job again (to that same trailer).

PPG makes a light industrial paint in the ALK200 line. Mixed with the ALK201 hardner it makes for a nice finish without the use of a primer. Make sure you get the surface as clean as possible by prepping with a wire brush etc. The paint is an acrylic akylid modified enamel so I suggest you wear a good mask when painting. It drys fast with a good gloss and has excellent adhesion qualities. Without proper prep, the extra step of priming a surface can create more problems. I'm assuming you are painting your trailer black but this paint comes in a variety of colors for under $50 a gallon. Good luck.

Your not lazy, thats for sure, wire brushing that monster. Use regular primer or none. It won't last anyway. Sandblast.
