If you are getting orange peel, It could be from too much air pressure, holding the gun too close, too hot a reducer or too thick material.

Slower reducer in reply to t.r.y., 03-06-2007 12:26:26
Smaller tip for even metalic, slower thinner for
flow. Is primer smooth?

The tip for HVLP topcoats should be 1.3-1.6 -- preferably 1.3 or 1.4. 1.8 is a fire hose. Make sure you are not exceeding the pressure that should be marked on the gun. Depending on the gun the max pressure could be from a low of about 30 to a high of about 50. Fluid set at about 1/4 turn from wide open with the trigger pulled. Pattern about 1/4 turn from wide open also. Otherwise, you have the wrong paint ratio, gun too close, too far, etc.

If you are using the correct (slow drying) reducer , it don't matter what needle or air cap or air pressure , the paint will flow out smooth. (assuming the prep work was smooth to start with) If you are using quick drying reducer to ward off excess dirt in paint like most do , then the spray equipment and spray style definately comes into play. Slow dry reducer can be your friend but you have to be able to anticipate flow out to avoid runs. Spray test panels first.
