I've been asked to paint an older 2 ton truck with an aluminum 18 ft box. I'm concerned about adhesion without removing all the old paint off the box. It's not peeling too bad but bad enough. Any info as far as proper prep is appreciated.

18 ft box is a pretty big rascal to strip. how boout having it soda blasted? the soda will strip the paint off and give a mild rough surface to work with, this would eliminate the need for the aluminum prep but may save you a little money and time in the long run, you'd need maybe 5 gallons of stripper and a lot of elbow grease. soda blast, multi prep cleaner, then epoxy prime.

Hi,

Here's what I would do. First, strip all old paint completely, probably with a chemical stripper. Next clean the bare aluminum with PPG DX533 Aluminum Cleaner. I believe this is the exact same stuff as Alumiprep 33. DuPont has a comparable product but I don't have the number handy. Then condition the cleaned aluminum with PPG DX503 Aluminum Conditioner (same link as the DX533). I believe this is the exact same product as Alodine 1201. Again, DuPont has a comparable product. next, apply two coats of a two-part automotive epoxy primer such as PPG OMNI MP Series. DuPont also has a similar epoxy product. Lastly, apply the topcoat of your choice.

I use alodine at work all the time. Alodine is an acid. DO NOT spray it!!!! wear protective equipment, especially respritory and eye protection. Wear rubber gloves and rinse with clear water if you get on yourself.
