Has anyone used Dynatron glazing and spot putty before applying primer? This is the red putty in a tube. I tried it on a small pieace of rough metal and the sanded putty was very smooth and left no voids. But, how does it hold up under primer and paint?

any body shop supply company that sells paint products can get it for you, if there is nothing in your area, stop by your local body shop, they may order it for you.

Check your local source of automotive paint supplies. If they supply materials to local autobody shops, they will either carry it or an essentially identical product from another company. I use 3M's Flowable Finishing Putty, part #05824:

It's basically the same stuff as the Icing glennster mentions - just marketed by a different company. I get it at my local NAPA dealer. Not cheap - cost was $35 about 6 months ago. It comes in a 24oz tube. Price includes hardener.

Hi,

It sounds like the old nitrocellulose lacquer spot putty. Check the instructions for it. I don't think it was intended for application to bare metal. It is also subject to shrinkage, which can be a problem if applied too thick, so only use with very light coats (maximum 5 mils per coat) and allow a liberal dry time between coats. I'd use it sparingly. A better choice nowadays, with less shrinkage, is the two-part polyester finishing putties, as glennster indicates, although they will not sand quite as easily as the old lacquer ones and they are more expensive. Unlike the lacquers, the polyesters "cure" by chemical reaction of the components rather than drying caused by evaporation of the solvents. Both lacquer and polyester putties fill the demand for something finer than regular body fillers but heavier than surfacers. The polyester putties make excellent fillers for typical rust pits, which are not deep enough for body filler but too deep for practical use of surfacer:

I have not used that particular brand. That type of product is meant to fill pinholes and VERY shallow imperfections. Remember that it is nothing more than thick primer. You don't want the primer too thick, same with the putty. The hardened version that Glennster uses is likely better, but, I have used only the single part putty--no problems.

i havent used that particular brand, but we use a finishing putty as a final skim coat before priming to eliminate any pinholes. we use a product madeby usc called icing polyester finishing putty, its basically real fine, runny body filler, you add a hardener just like body filler and apply a skim coat , finish sand, then prime. third party image
