I am restoring a 52 HF T0-30. The tractor will be used with a finish mower to mow 4+ ac of lawn. I do not plan on "showing" the tractor, but would like to have it look like "new". This will be my first paint project. I have completly stripped and cleaned the tractor and used the TSC oil based primer. It really looks good primed! If I use the TCS tractor enamel, what additives do I mix with the paint? How many coats? How can I tell if the TSC Ferguson Gray is close to the original color?

tsc sells a hardener for their paint, it will be right in the aisle with the tractor paint. probably called valspar hardener. check the paint can for the thinner, i believe its mineral spirits. ususally you cut the paint around 10% with thinner.add a little at a time and stir it good, it starts out thick but thins up real quick. i like to put a thin coat down for the first coat, kind of a tack coat. let it flash for about 1/2 hour, the spirits evaporate slow, then put two heavy coats down. be careful, as its a slow dry and if you get it too heavy you get sags and runs. your color should be pretty close to the origional, but may not be the exact match. the factory paint was a bulk mix, and they have variances in color, same as the automotive manufacturers. be sure to scuff the primer with a red scotchbrite pad to roughen it up, then hit it with a tack cloth to get the dust off just before you paint.

Farm store paint is the cheapest you can buy anywhere. Most tractor dealer paint is alkyd enamel also. That price is more in line with the price of acrylic enamel, though. Remember that the quart price will always be higher that the gallon price when multiplied by 4, should not be that much difference though. There is also an acrylic modified alkyd enamel that is somewhat higher than straight alkyd. Both the acrylic modified alkyd and pure acrylic are better paints than alkyd because of UV protection. Alkyd was developed in the 30's and is not much better now than it was then.

the tsc paint is an alkyd industrial enamel. more than likeley the paint from the dealer is an acrylic enamel. two different animals, plus the dealer usually adds a little extra markup for profit. depends on what you are doing, the alkyd is an easy to use real forgiving paint if you make a mistake, temperature, humidity are not as critical of a consideration with it as is the higher line paints. with them you need different reducers, retarders ect. the more you want to spend, the better the product you can get. if you are doing a show tractor, go with the best paint you can afford. if she is a working girl that you just want to put a new dress on, the tsc paint will be fine. preparation is 90% of a good paint job.
