I bought Rustoleum rusty metal primer for my tractor, should I use it? I want a nice finish without going broke. Will implement paint be okay with this primer? Is there something alltogether different I should use?

I've used both Case IH and John Deere paint over the primer you mentioned with excellent results.

Rod is correct in trying to stay with the Rustoleum line for the entire job. But if you want to use the Rusty Metal primer and paint with regular automotive or implement paint you can seal the Rustoleum primer with any good quality epoxy primer after sanding the Rustoeleum.

Hi Dave,

I recommend that you stick with the Rustoleum topcoats if you use their rusty metal primer...just to be sure that everything is compatible. Also, if you thin either the primer or the topcoat at all, make sure you use whatever specific thinner is called for on the can label. I think Rustoleum has their own proprietary thinner and cautions against using generic products like turpentine and such. Best to stick with the entire Rustoleum system rather than mixing different types of materials.

If you were to decide you wanted to use one of the inexpensive tractor/implement enamels that are available in order to get a specific manufacturer's color, I would not use the Rustoleum primer at all. Use whatever primer is called for on the can label of the topcoat.

Make sure you adhere carefully to the dry times between coats that is indicated on the label and try to avoid any contact of the paint with gasoline for at least 30 days and preferably several months.

Rod
