The drawback to sand & polish is visible swirl marks in the sun. Ultra fine $$$ sand paper, polish and glaze using wool and foam pads is the way to go. It may need glazing again in a few years. If this is done to soon after painting (jello), it'll dull after a day or so. Even worse it might roll off like a fruit rollup.

after painting, there may be dust, orange peel (rough looking paint) or other minor imperfections. to remove them you water sand the new paint with fine grit wet cut sandpaper, generally 1500 to 2000 grit, sand the imperfections out , then using a buffer and compounds, polish the paint to a high gloss.

to be on the safe side, if you used hardener, give it a week, if not i'd wait 3-4 weeks. get it out in the sun to help dry it.
