Could I take photo of decal and print it on paper and glue it on and then clear coat over to protect. Is that possible or does anyone know of a way to do it better?

For an auto restoration thing I took some artwork to a sign shop and had a decal made. But I didn"t use the positive part of the decal. Instead I removed the lettering and used the rest of the decal as a stencil. I applied it to the surface and airbrushed the open letter spaces and removed the stencil and had the lettering look just like factory silkscreening/pad printing. My real question is, where original model designation decals like on my 960 ford, or were they painted on or pad printed or silkscreened?

As was suggested above-take it to a sign shop like Signs by Tommorow. You"ll get it printed on vinyl that is meant to be exposed to the weather and hold up for 10-12 years. If you shed your tractor it will likely outlive the paintjob. Heck you could even get the tractor tin "wrapped" with vinyl printed with your face on it lol

If you have the image you want to make the decal of then take it to a sign shop and have them make it. I had this done with a signature of my fathers to go on my tractor and it turned out better than the decals you buy. I think it cost me around $12.

Hi L.D.

You can get a clear (mylar?) decal material (8.5x11) for inkjet printing of window decals from either Xerox or Avery at Staples office products.

Take a jpg photo and use graphics software to convert to either gif or png formats. Then use graphics software to make the background transparent - if you want that effect - otherwise stay with jpg. Print with color inkjet. Apply to surface and clearcoat.

I have done something like this for an inside window decal but no clearcoat. The "adhesive" on the material is not strong at all. In fact a decal is very easily removed from glass w/o a trace of any "adhesive". For that reason and the fact that inkjet prints are not waterproof, any such decal on tractors or equipment must be clearcoated. I recommend a test case to make sure of not only the correct printing orientation and scaling but also to verify that whatever clearcoat you use will not damage the decal material or the image itself. A urethane clear would probably be the best choice provided there was compatibility with your color coat. Be aware that clears are best applied within a limited time period after the color for the best adhesion properties.

That's if you want to do it yourself with commonly available equipment. I think there are some vendors that will (for $$$) take your photo or artwork and make professional cut vinyl or regular mylar decals of it for you.
