I need the paint code for the gray on a Ford 8N. I will be using Dupont Centari or Nason paint. I asked the question on the Ford sites but no response.

I like the Nason Ful-Thane and gives you the auto finish most desire. If you go online to Dupont they have a 800 number and call them as to the mix (color). I just done a Cockshutt for a customer and they answered all my questions. They will tell you what products that you will need to do a complete job. As most will tell you, you need compatable primers to the paint, etch primers and so on.

I just did a pair of fenders for a guy and he supplied the paint and it was Ford paint, hate the stuff, hard to work with.

If you go to the Nason site you can down load Tech-Tips and they do help.

Hi,

I am not familiar with Ford tractor colors but I'll pass along what information I have. As usual with tractor colors, more than one gray was used by Ford. Many old tractor manufacturers used the famous DuPont Dulux alkyd enamel, which has been discontinued by DuPont. It is an old chemistry. Dupont has listed many old tractor colors in this document. Take your pick as to what gray to use. My bet would be on the 29665 as it is noted to be from an "old tractor book". No guarantees though. I'd buy the smallest possible quantity first and see if it meets your expectations, as you may be disappointed once you see it. That code doesn't appear to be currently available in Centari - only in NASON. I suspect that is due to DuPont not converting all the old Dulux shades over to all the more modern product chemistries. Please note that with the NASON Ful-Cry II acrylic enamel, a catalyst is not optional but is required for proper curing. That is unusual for an acrylic enamel. It can have a bearing on your choice of product if you lack supplied-air breathing equipment for safely dealing with isocyanate-containing additives. The 29665 code is also available in NASON Fast-Dry acrylic enamel which doesn't require a catalyst additive. Whatever your choice, you should obtain the appropriate product technical data sheet from the DuPont website. That will give detailed mixing and usage information for the product - more than what is on the can label. If you need a link for those, advise and I will post it.

I am surprised you didn't get some info from the Ford experts on that forum. Perhaps someone who has personal experience with the old Ford colors will share their experience here.

Another thought:

If you purchase a small quantity of the 29665 in NASON and find it to be a satisfactory shade but really wanted it in Centari, here's a suggestion. Do a sample sprayout with the 29665. Take that to your DuPont dealer and see how close a match you can get with one of DuPont's Spectramaster generic colors. If you can come close, I believe the Spectramaster colors are available in all DuPont chemistries, including Centari. Be forwarned however that Centari is currently pricey for an acrylic enamel and if you haven't purchased any in recent years, you may be in for a shock. It's also field-mixable in three different formulations for any single color. You need to decide on which formulation you want before you purchse the materials as different additives are used in each of the three.
