I had to replace the gas tank on my farmall H.The tank I bought was very clean on the inside, but very nasty on the outside. I ground it down clean with a wire wheel, washed and dryed it and sprayed it with IH 2150 from a rattle can.My question is, when I paint this tractor, can I paint over this with 2150 with thinner and hardener or is that asking for trouble?

There's primer surfacers that allow you some thickness to sand it flat. And there are primer sealers. You want a sealer over the old paint. Don't forget to sand it down good for a good bond.

I agree with Gordo. If you did not prime, take it to bare metal. Otherwise the base becomes the 2150 rattle can paint, which is probably not very good. In the future, if you don't want to topcoat right away, use 2 part epoxy (not rattle can epoxy). It is waterproof. Then when you want to topcoat, scuff it with a scotchbrite pad, give it another coat of epoxy, then topcoat. The paint jobs I have seen using no primer chip or peel to bare metal, resulting in rust.

What did you prime the tank with? If you used rattle can primer you are going to have to take it all down to bare metal again if you repaint. If you didn't prime at all, you are absolutlely going to have to resand/sandblast back to bare metal.

You could always re-prime it if you think there will be a problem.

I have painted over spray painted parts that had good cured spray paint on them, using naptha as a thinner and hardner.

I wouldn't paint over new / fresh spray paint though... only well cured. And even then.. i -usually- re-prime the parts..
