Water base is already here, it beats solvent hands down in every aspect, california is the first to go and all private body shops and any selling paint yhere must be on water base by the end of 2008, canada is to be all water by 2009, the rest of the US will follow shortly, there is already some shops in new england and PA using water. The OEM's are 40% water and Ford has just developed some equipment to clean the exhaust before it leaves the building that will save solvent for the next 10 years, but refinish will go all water within a few years. the equipment is the same as what we are using now, SATA 3000 guns with 1.3 or WSB tips

It's the old VOCs fraud. Regulators spewing gallons of VOCs in their SUVs policing body shops using 2 or 3 oz while painting a fender.

Basecoats are becoming real popular but so far no clears yet. As for timeframe we haven't heard anything concrete. I would guess some states such as California are being pushed more though. I'm in Wisconsin.

Are you sure you don't mean that the manufacturers will be using water born at that time? They already are in California. I don't see the aftermarket that supplies the collision repair industry , going water until all the OEM has converted over which I don't see happening for another 5 yrs or so. The OEM painting systems are nothing like the repair industry. It will be a major undertaking to convert the repair industry to water if it can even be done without sacrificing a lot of quallity , speed and durability. The customer will probably be the guinia pig again like they were in the late '80,s and early '90,s when all the clear coat delaminated and the base let go from the primer. It will be nice if they can pull it off but something tells me the regulations are still way ahead of technology especially when it comes to the repair industry. We simply cannot afford the equipment they have to apply the coatings they can apply the way they do it. The coatings they apply and the way they apply and bake them is light years ahead of what we have available to try to duplicate their paint job. You have got to give credit to the collision repair industry for taking a completely different refinish technology and conditions and still duplicate their finish right down to the exact color match and gloss. These people should be making $1-200,000 a year for that kind of skill and patience. Maybe if they would just wear a white shirt and tie while they are working ??? N-OOOOO_T.
