The bumper on the rear of my F150 has a bunch of rusty spots. It's chrome.
I am thinking of sanding/priming/painting it.

I was looking at the chrome spray bombs...do they produce a good finish? I will likely clear over whatever basecoat I put down.

Should I just spray it a silver color?

Thanks for any advice.

If the rust spots aren't too bad you can clean them up with 0000 steel wool. It will clean off surface rust and not scratch the chrome. It also works well for getting bugs off windshields.

Try rubbing it with some aluminum foil. That is what we used way back when.Sometimes the foil rub will make them look like new again.

You can't make chrome with paint. In other words it will not look like chrome, it will look like paint, nor will it be anywhere near as durable as chrome. Not that there is anything wrong with that, as long as you only want the bumper repaired and it does not have to look like new.

CNKS,

I was watching one of those car restoration shows a few months ago and they used a new "chrome paint" on a hood of a car. I think it was the show with Boyd Cottington.

I dont remember the brand name but I do remember it turned out pretty good. It was about a three step process and the first coat of paint was black. Might be someting interesting to try sometime.

Just a few weeks ago I painted chrome bumpers with some of that chrome paint. I had used that chrome paint before and it rubs off easy. At least mine did. This time I painted the bumpers and clear coated them thinking the clear coat would protect them. The clear coat changed the color from chrome (bright silver)to a grayish silver. It changed quite a bit, it certainly wasn't chrome looking any more but it is a lot tougher. Actually I like the way it looks.
