I want to paint my john deere 40 that has a good coat of paint, and the metal is very good and straight, but the paint is faded very badly. Can I wet sand the existing paint and spray over this or do I need to strip it down to the bare metal? I plan on using a hardner. Will the paint stick to the smooth surface from wet sanding? thanks

I would recommend sanding it down with 800 grit just to get the paint to stick, should work

As long as the paint is sound, you can wet or dry sand it, whichever works best for you. If you see any of it flaking off, though, take it to bare metal, as the rest will eventually come off taking your new paint with it. Either way prime it with epoxy primer. For the smoothest finish, put a sandable surfacer over the epoxy. You do not need the surfacer on the chassis or other cast parts. However, it is possible that your paint has rust under it. The only way to fix that is to remove it.

I would scuff the exsisting paint, then apply a coat of primer. Then sand and wet sand before applying the final coat. Thats how Ive always done it, and Ive always had pretty good results.
