Painting a Ford 641

I just bought my first tractor. It isn’t off the trailer from the 1300 mile round trip yet. It is a 1960 Ford 641 with gas engine and a Wagner front loader.

The tractor appears to have been painted twice, but the paint is pretty well gone. It seems to have been red originally, then yellow, and now what is left of the blue.

I have no delusions of restoring it right now but I do want to protect it. Since I really need to use it I can’t get too carried away. My intent is to not disassemble much of anything but to get some paint on it for protection. Since I want to paint it, I think I might as well paint it the original colors, including the Wagner loader.

I have been reading this site for info. And I found a few pictures of similar models. I have a million questions but for now, can anyone tell me where I can find out the color scheme, and who might locally carry the correct paint for this tractor and loader. The photos I’ve seen have the 641’s a red and gray but I have no idea what is correct.

Thanks, this site is a wealth of information.

Jr, I looked at your pictures. Looks like you started disassembly and kept going! I've done that more than once.

The pictures I have found on-line show the 641 with numerous paint colors. The word "Workmaster" is sometimes used and sometimes not, so I'm not sure but I think it is a Workmaster. I couldn't find any detailed close-up pictures of 641's but looking on line I have seen 1957-1960 models. Some were all red with aluminum colored wheels, one was red with cream wheels, fenders, and hood, and one was blue and cream! I'm hoping someone knows the correct colors. The most common theme seems to be red with white/cream fenders and wheels, and red lug nuts, but I have no idea if that is correct. I have been using this picture as an example, since the paint appears to be original Link . It seems to have the aluminum colored wheels, which I'm not seeing as often as the cream or white. That could be replacement wheels that were never painted I guess.

i'm sure it's not the blue and grey model. the red and grey ford paint tsc carries is a very close match it has a tint of orange in it. the underside of my hood and fuel tank were the original color and it matched well. There's some purist out there that will tel you the excatcolor numbers from dupont but who really knows what the colors were you know monday factory paint could be a slight bit different than tuesday paint they mixed up huge batches of paint at the factory. a 20 20 paint job for a working tractor is what i have and she looks great to me not a show piece but good at 20 feet and at 20 mph. 95% of the paint job is the stripping and preperation. it took mine down to bare metal in most areas were i didn't i was down to a what i think was a black factory primer. i'll be posting some more all done pictures later this week. Hey good luck and have fun with it i liked the research part of it. anymore questions just post JR.

if you have a tractor and supply company TSC in your area they'll have all the paint and primer and all the things to get you going they'll even have books on what color and how to do books there i only say this cause you say you just want a work tractor . there are other places to get the pricey paints and primers. I did my 841 with tsc stuff and it looks fine. I mixed up a gallon of red with hardner in it and brushed most of the cast and the bottom of the tractor. i did end up getting way more into it than i wanted to but if you don't want to remove alot of stuff and just want to protect it and make it look reasonable tsc is the way to go JR.

JR,

Did you get the hardner at TS as well? I have a TS about 1.5 hrs. from me. I recall them having implement paint. I suspect the Ford red and light gray they sell would be pretty close to "right" for this tractor.
