Got the paint - any tips? (corlar 2.1 pr)

Hi,

Well, I finally got the paint for the backhoe and the primer. Whew! One day short of 3 weeks after ordering. Oh well. On the bright side, the company threw in 200 disposable gloves and a pair of safety glasses for my trouble. That was nice of them.

But, 3 1/2 weeks ago I was blissfully ignorant on how hard the 2.1 PR is to get and finished sandblasting all the metal, then ordered the paint. Now there is some surface rust. I will be blasting that off tomorrow, then painting on Wednesday. So, as this is my first time using the Corlar 2.1PR - any tips? Just mix and spray?

I'm using an inexpensive gravity fed HVLP Binks knock off with 1.4 or 1.8 nozzle. I have a copy of the data sheet, but was just looking to get a warm and fuzzy from some one with direct experience.

Thanks!
jb

yeah. your gonna need some tips. first get a "Sheer" mixing paddle for your drill, not he "mud" mixer from home depot but a sheer mixer, it has straight sides not the screw type blades, this will "cut" the coating and help with viscosity. this stuff is very thick. I don't think you will have good results without a pressure pot, pressurized HVLP cup, or an airless gun, again the stuff is very thick, you may need to get some reducer from your jobber, remember, spray epoxy's "wet" not medium or dry,

Thanks Frank.

I found an air powered paint can shaker on sale at HF for 99 bucks and had a 15% off coupon. So, I got one. Pure luxury purchase, but I hate to stand around shaking cans by hand or using the propeller mixer and splattering the shop by mistake. (again)

I have some of the reducer Y32035 on the way - will be here tomorrow. The sheets call for 15% reduction by volume. If more required to call the experts. (You) So, what can be done to thin it beyond the 15% so my normal HVLP gun will work?

well you can reduce more the 15% but it will be out of VOC compliance and i'm not leagally allowed to tell you to do that. And i am worried about who veiws these forums as I've found some of my responseds from other auto paint forums on the BASF web site. Thats were the sheer mixing comes into play it will thin the paint by the sheering action of the tool, something you wont get from a shaker

Frank,

Gotcha. VOC compliance is only attainable if dilution is 15% or less of Y32035 thinner.

If you can get a #2 Zahn cup, you can check viscosity before you spray. If you can get it to around 30 seconds, the HVLP will spray it fine. I would also make sure product is good and warm as that will lower viscosity also.

Re: Sprayed the paint today.... in reply to DurangoCase, 05-11-2007 13:54:27
Well, I took the plunge.

The water ain't as bad as expected (feared).

First I went to the local harbor freight and bought the cheap pressurized 2 qt HVLP gun. I also used the HF paint shaker for 5 min on each component - then repeated it 2x. I mixed in about 12% of the Y32035 thinner.

The stuff does shoot on with a lot of splattery spots. That may be a combination of the high viscosity, the cheap gun and my lack of painting talent. I only had 1 run and it was in a spot I didn't care about. (had the fluid flow lever on the gun bump and go to full bore) I put 2 medium thick coats on about 1/2 of the parts for the hoe. It was a rough day. First off, the HF gun I bought this AM leaked air like a screen door. The built in regulator wasn't silver soldered completely to the cap. I used a 1/2 roll of teflon tape thinking it was afitting. Returned it and got a second one. Same stinking deal. Well, I NEEDED to spray today so JB weld to the rescue!

Then hanging the parts to spray was a challange. (don't ask - it ain't pretty)

Now I need to let it slow dry over night and squirt some color tomorrow 3.5 HG in basic black.

Basic Black in reply to john_bud, 05-11-2007 21:03:49
Well, the color coat is on. 3 coats of color. I do have to say that the transition from the Corlar 2.1 PR to the Imron 3.5 HG was huge. And I wasn't quite ready for it. I had the gun set wrong somewhere and really slathered it on. Oops, runs on the bucket.

Then I found out that it's real hard to tell what is coated and what ain't when it's black on red and the light isn't too good. Did a coat, came back in 4-5 hours and saw all the places I missed. SPrayed the next day - checked in 4-5 hours and found I still missed places. Doh! What a numb nut.

Did the 3rd coat today and I think it's all coated pretty good, but the wind is picked up to 20-30 mph and the dust is swirling. Oh well, the dirt will cover the ugly painting in use (hopefully).
