What color is correct for 2cyl fuel caps? I see all combinations of green, red, and black. Were they the same on all years and models? I am working on a 46 B if that changes anything but have several others to do.

Working with JD tractors most of my life, I remember my father telling my why the caps were painted different colors. He was 14 when the farm got the new 1946 "A", and the dealer told them " start the tractor on gas, switch over to fuel after it's warmed up. Then before you shut it down, switch it back to gas and let it run for a while. The first time you shut it off on FUEL will convince you to follow what I told you"

I have asked this before on the JD forum and it really caused a ruccus. Here's what I came away with. All fuel tractors had green for "fuel" and red for "gas". Obvious reasons. Some "printed " adds have shown them red even on gas only tractors. These type adds , in my opinion are a very poor indicator of what's correct. If common sense comes into play , there should be something to differenciate between two fuel fillers that close together , hence, green for fuel and red for gas , but with only one cap (gas only) theres no reason to have a red cap. Granted , there are idiots that need an instruction decal on everything but if you don't know the diff. between the larger rad cap (green) clear at the front of the tractor and the smaller (green) gas cap at the rear then you shouldn't be near the tractor. Red paint has always cost more than green and thusly I don't believe the factory put red on gas only . If they did it was probably to use up excess stock after all fuels popularity dropped. Do what you want. There is NO definitive proof either way in my opinion. Red and green is for Olivers. Green looks "cleaner" if it is gas only.

Thanks for your help and I know every question about color brings out differing opinions. Your thoughts make total sense to me. Just today I worked on the "gas" tank and the cap clearly had red paint under green. Thanks again.
