Everybody tells me to use a primer color that is closest to the color of my paint. My paint is Tisco Vermillion Red and Ford Med. Gray. Is any brand of primer compatible with tisco's paint? Paint and primer will be applied with my grav. fed spray gun. Thanks for your help!

I"m not getting into a big discussion but i"v painted for over 40 years and the reason to color your primer is some paints are Bleeders and Red is a bleeder and you will save paint if you can cover the bleeder faster with less paint also you can use a sealer and that will stop the under coat from bleeding thu.

I guess I don't agree with "everybody". While it's true that a chip down to the primer won't show as much if the primer color is close to the topcoat color; with a contrasting color it is much easier to see the places you miss with the topcoat. I suppose if the primer color is close enough to the topcoat color that the missed places don't show, and you don't mind primer as a "topcoat", it's ok. However, it is hard to see into the nooks and crannies and the underside of cast, in particular, and you can easily touch up those missed places with topcoat shortly after you think you are done if you used a contrasting primer color.

That theory is basically a "crutch" for faulty procedures or antiquated products. If it's covered,it's covered , if it ain't , it ain't. It don't matter what colors you use. "Bleeder" colors are a thing of the past. That problem doesn't exist with todays products either. Use good chemistry and forget about "colors".

Hi Chris,

Don't worry about the primer color not being close to the topcoat color. You won't have a problem with enamels such as TISCO. As far as "any brand" primer being compatible? I wouldn't count on it. The safest bet would be to use the primer that is recommended on the TISCO can label. I think a two-part automotive epoxy would do fine also, but I have never tried that combination.
