This is a re-post from the Ford discussion forum, as I thought maybe I'd get some feedback from some different paint experts on this board:

Hey all,

I am working on the surface prep for my paint job on my 48 8n. Cleaning, degreasing, smoothing, etc. I'm going to be using Valspar paint from TSC as the paint of choice. Can/should I plan on spraying over the valspar (alkyd enamel) with a clear coat? If yes, what kind should I get? I'm wondering if it would give extra gloss and longevity. What type of preparation is needed, is it necessary to wet sand the paint before applying the clear coat? I'm planning on using hardner in the TSC paint to give it extra durability and gloss. If it turns out glossy, I'm not sure I'd want to scuff it up to apply a clearcoat. What do you guys think?

Also, what is the average longevity of a TSC paint job in years if the tractor is barn kept, under a cover? It will only be used occasionally.

i would pass on the clear coat, you will need a clear that is compatible with the alkyd, using the hardener, you should be fine with just the single stage, put the last coat on wet, you should get a good shine. in the barn you should get an easy 10 years or better out of the paint.

I agree with glennster and will add that if after it has cured you still want more gloss the scuff and/or buff to shine. Forget the clear in this case.
