Some say they yellow the gear selection #'s on the shift quadrant , embossed level indicators on the oil bath air filter housing , and if it has the round axle housing with John on one side and DEERE on the other in raised letters that they should be yellow. I agree on the axle housing but the other is up for debate. Fan blades; some have found yellow to be the first coat of paint under all successive re-paints when stripping down for restoration. Whether Deere did them ALL that way is also up for debate. To me it makes sense up until they couldn't hardly build enough to fill demand and were more profit driven as apposed to pride driven. I believe from '47 on up there were no yellow fan blades. Post your Q on the JD board for more expanded range of experienced answers.

The yellow fanblade backside thingy is really a result of a safety measure for when the tractors were all hand-start, or still be ordered as handstart. After the electric start became standard in late'47, there was no need for the warning, because you were not reaching up to the carburetor to handle the choke as the engine powered up. Even if you hand cranked an electric start tractor, you reached up and to the right to handle the choke and throttle, so you avoided, or SHOULD have been clear of the fan area Most I have talked to at expo's and such say the fanblade yellow (brushed on from a common bucket, nothing fancy) went into '41 as least. Someone like JR Hobbs might be able to narrow it down, but a '38 had it IMHO.

Highlighting the lettering on the quadrant was never done at the factory. Yellow would be the decals on the hood, the model number decal on the seat rail, and the rear axle lettering. And don't put the black circle letter designator decal on the grills. It did not appear until late '47 with the late styled tractors.
