To start off with, I usually use Napa TCI John Deere paint with a hardner. Always worked well for me. Well, I was given a gallon of John Deere paint from John Deere. I went and bought the John Deere thinner, but they don't have hardner and the instructions don't say anything about a hardner on the can. The guys at JD are clueless with the paint.

Is this paint supposed to use a harnder? Reason I'm asking is because my first time using this paint the paint looked like it was cracking. I let it set for 3-4 days to dry. I am now trying to resand it and the paint keeps gumming up the sand paper.

Need help/advice with John Deere paint.

Bob

The reason your paint looks like it cracked is because you used the wrong temp. thinner for the air temp. you painted in.

You can just wet sand it to smooth it up then spray a few more coats on it and your done. I don't use hardner, but I don't use JD thinner as it is too slow dry. I have used some thinner from NAPA before but forget the number. Just make sure it is for enamel paint.

The way I learned to thin it is once you stir it up with your paint stick add enough thinner so as when you lift the stir stick up out of the paint it is thin enough to come off in droplets instead of a stream. I just use a regular old siphon cup gun and regulate the air pressure down to 35-40 ? I forget for sure I just "get-er-done"

The JD paint is alkyd enamel, thus use a hardener designed for alkyd enamel, some people say the acrylic enamel hardener will work. It gums up the sandpaper because it isn't cured, and it sounds to me like you put it on too thick, or didn't let it flash between coats. I don't use alkyd enamel and don't know what NAPA TCI paint is, so I can't comment further.

JD paint is synthentic enamel.Yes, hardner will work.I add 8oz of thinner,4oz of hardner, and 2oz of fish eye eliminator to each quart of paint.

Correct, did not use hardner on the JD Paint. I decided to try to get it all off and just stick with the NAPA paint I normally use and have success with. Now the task is to get it off. Not an easy one.

Unless you have body filler under it, strip it with methylene chloride. New paint will come off fairly easily.

Yes, there is body filler under the paint. I will probably have to repair some of it since I did scour some of it. Still working on getting it off.
