Which paint to use?

I will be painting my fourth Oliver soon. In the past, I have used Dupont Centari and hardener and had pretty good results - have have been paying about $130 a gallon for paint alone. My Olivers are for show and play - maybe used once a week in summer and might move a little snow with a loader but otherwise will be in the shed the rest of the time. Do I need an automotive paint or would the Agco Oliver paint with hardener fit this application? Also, is the Agco paint an acrylic enamal or what? I've heard stories of cheap paint fading and oxidizing but the Agco stuff is $60 a gallon and didnt know what to expect. Any advice on automotive paint vs. dealer paint is appreciated. Also I think Hersal-Adams makes the Agco paint.

Not trying to be a d**k , but do you use the cheapest tires , mechanical parts , fluids etc that you can find for your Olivers??? If your budget won't accomodate $ 130 for "quallity" paint then you should re-think whether you can afford to re-do the tractor at all. Seriously , $130 will probably be one of the lowest cost things you do to the tractor and show up the most. Most won't bat an eye on spending that much on electronic ignition conversion that won't perform any better than a properly set and maintained points system , but heaven forbid we spend a little more for good paint that WILL make a difference.

Not familiar with Agco but usually if the paint is a higher quality they'll tell you. It's probably alkyd oil enamel. If you're use to Centari, you'll hate it.

I just painted the rims and sign boards on my Oliver and did some touch up work on a few places on the tractor using the AGCO paint. I sprayed it with my Binks HVLP siphon gun with and without use of a hardner. I thinned the first cup using acetone, but soon realized I didn't need to thin at all. I was mixing 2/4/1 (2 parts thinner - 4 parts paint - 1 part hardner)and just dropped the thinner out of the mix for my remaining batches.

It came out glossy any way I did it. I did try an area without hardner and I couldn't really tell the difference. I was impressed enough that I'm going to paint my next one using the same.

Now, I've done them both ways, big $$$ epoxy paint finishes and cheap TSC paint jobs. I will admit that the TSC stuff loses gloss over time, but we haven't had any fading issues. The jury is still out on the AGCO product in that regard. To early to tell. If you really want that better than original mirrior finish you probably need to stick with an acrylic enamel. It is my opinion that the $$$ cost of that paint belongs to show tractors... I mean what if you scratch it?
