Hey guys, I just found this site and may immediately get laughed off of it when I pose my question:

I'm in the process of doing some cosmetic "restoration" on my 8N. It has been in my family for years, though not bought new. Very little rust, no deep, pitted rust, but it does have dings. I have no experience in body work or painting, but I have taken the hood down to bare metal and Bondo'ed the dings (haven't started on the fenders and rims yet). I have primed with Rustoleum in a spray can, and intend to finish coat with Ford grey from spray cans bought from the Ford dealer. Same with the heavy metal parts---Rustoleum primer, Ford Red from a spray can.

Am I nuts or what? I'm not trying to make it a show tractor, just improve its looks and protect it from the elements. Thanks for your comments, no matter how abusive.

Hi Jerry,

No, you're not nuts. But you are mixing and matching products. Unless you've successfully used the exact same combination before, or can find someone who has, mixing and matching can be a crap shoot. The normal recommendation would be to use a Rustoleum topcoat if you used a Rustoleum primer, making sure the Rustoleum topcoat label specifically referenced that particular primer. That's the safest bet. Similarly, if you wish to use a color topcoat from the Ford dealer, you would generally be advised to use the primer that is recommended on the label for that dealer paint.
