I would really like to have the 8N done by the first big show of the year which is the 3rd weekend in September, I really need to get this show on the road, mechaniclly I believe the tractor is in great shape now time for cosmetics, all my bigger peices of sheet metal will be taking a trip to the sandblaster, smaller peices I will use paint stripper and good ole fashion sand paper or steel wool, Now my question is how to clean up that old cast iron. It has been painted before but I'm pretty sure there was no primer sprayed on before the paint, just powerwashed real good and then painted, Paint appears to be in decent shape although wrong shade of red, should I wire brush all that paint off and apply primer and then my vermillion red? What are you guy's thoughts on cleanin that up, is paint stripper a possibilty or is wire brushin the way to go? I'm not going for the 'Over Restoration' look just want it cleaned up and lookin decent. As always your ideas and suggestions are greatly appreciated, Thanks!

I sand blasted my cast parts, but they were all apart at the time. For a still together tractor, try a needle scaler from Harbor freight. I used one on my backhoe and it does a decent job when used in conjunction with a angle grinder/wire brush.

But if the paint is good, scratch it up with 400 grit and use a good primer.

I power wash after oven cleaner, chemically strip the remaining paint, wire brush on electric drill or angle grinder, then multiple applications of some cleaning compound followed by multiple applications of wax and grease remover. Then use epoxy primer and topcoat. Do not use etch primer on cast. Others disagree, but I don't like sand, or any other blasting compound anywhere near moving parts of any kind.

Sandblast the cast iron too. Unless you are very skilled, over restoration is not a worry. Do your best and claim you didn't.

I bought a sandblast attachment that goes on my powerwasher, does a good job and no dust.
