Has anyone found a source for a stencil to paint the Ford script on the hood and fenders of an 8N?
I read in earlier messages that the best way to paint the script was with a roller. Gaspump wrote "get a brayer which is a hard rubber roller used to ink stencils." But it still sounds kinda hard to do. If you know of a source stencils please let me know. Thanks. RD

I got them in the '8n' kit from tractor supply.. It had both hood decals.. plus a stencil.... mind you the stencil was not adhesive,...and was almost useless.. except as for making another stencil out of masking tape.

Mind you.. this was about 7ys ago.. so i don'k know if they include the stencil anymore... however.. if they don't.. it's not to hard to lay some white typewriter paper over the decal.. and then trace it out.. then tape some o fthat wide 3" masking tape to a piece of wax paper then lay your template over it and cut out with an exacto knife. Then peel the masking tape off ( I like the blue tape.. it releases easier.. ) and apply it to your hood.. smooth it out for a good seal.. then paint.. allow to cure.. then remove the template..

I bought a decal set that had a set of stencils as well as decals in it for the script. neither worked good as the stencil allowed paint to capilary under it.

What i found to work good was to get some 3" masking tape and a piece of wax paper.. pull an 8" strip of tape off and apply to the wax paper. Place your decal under it or stencil on top of it and use a pen to trace the marks onto the masking tape. Place it somewhere safe to cut and then use an exacto knife to cut out the stencil ID. peel it off and apply it firmly to the clean paint. ( blue EZ releasy maskingt ape works best for this.. if ya can't find 3" .. 2 overlapped pieces of 2" work..e tc.. )

Now.. if you are a spray can or spray gun person.. mask around this new adhesive stencil to prevent overspray.. otherwise hand paint with a brush and allow to tack.. peel off and reuse.. or make another one as they are so cheap.

My son just finished a restoration on an 8N and tried to use the vinyl decals. They are not a perfect fit for the raised letters and finally had a sign painter come out and letter them for him. They look great

Just painted the John Deere logo on the rear axle of my '43 B. I used a 3" foam roller I bought at the hardware store. Took about 10 min.,came out great and was easy.

This may be considered heresy, but have you considered the stick-on lettering?

J.Spears:
I had not considered the decals until today when I looked them up on the 8N tractors.com website. They look pretty good, made out of 7 year vinyl. The vinyl decals that I put on my Cat turned out well and look good. Thanks.RD
