Like the other guy, I didn't listen when they said put in hardener. The paint job did turn out great and dried in a reasonable amount of time and is not soft to touch. My question is, should I go back a spray a final coat with hardener in it over what I have already painted without hardener?

I've heard that if you add to much hardener the paint may dry in the air before it hits the surface. Is this true?

I'm satisfied with the results I got so far. I've been taking a few parts at a time and painting them. I wasn't planning on repainting them. I was planning on spraying the rest of the tractor this weekend. I bought the hardner thinking the paint would dry faster which is important to me because I'm painting outside and the dust and pollen is high this time of year. I would like to know what the hardner will do beside making the paint dry faster and gives it more gloss. I hope it makes it tougher on areas like the foot rest and pedals..... Bill in TN

What hardener does for me is it lets me sand the bugs out the next day and put on the next coat.

The hardener is really good stuff to help keep the paint intact, cut down the scratch potential and increase scratch and chip resistance.

If you take a part that you painted without hardener, and give it a good scratching you will see streaks of lighter paint from the object scratching the soft paint.

Then take the same object and scratch the hardened paint and compare.

Fr enamels, it really takes about a week or two to fully cure with hardener. It takes longer without hardener and I mean fully curing and cross linking and attaching to the subcoat primer.

Thinner coats building up to a high gloss is best.

Why not take 30 seconds, dump in the hardener, shake it up and spray. it's a win-win.

Amen to that!

To repair a paint job costs more time and money than it is worth sometimes. That can of hardener for $25 is cheap insurance toward a superior paint job.

I couldn't agree more....I see you haven't commented on how much to add. I am really concerned that the foot rest and pedals will chip after some use. I've only painted the hood, side skins, and grill so far and plan to add the hardner this weekend when I paint the rest of the tractor.....I'd appreciate your advise on how much to add....Thanks for the advise...Bill in TN

i glob it in. i don't measure it but i always add more. more doesn't hurt but have plenty on hand so you don't run out. i put on extra coats at high abrasion areas like the transmission cover area, pedals, running boards, spindles and hubs. in fact put more paint on it than you think.
