Hi, I plan to practice painting my dad"s old gravity wagon...want to paint a tractor in a few years, and figure this is good practice that I cant mess up!
the metal has some slight rust...how important is this to remove? remember, for this old wagon, I am just trying to practice painting with some cheap paint...will the paint coat last sevaral years if left outside? What about a primer coat? it is 95% faded paint on there now....not too rusty...

Also, i know there are paints that are not safe to use without supplied air...so I dont want those now...what can I use that is "safe" without supplied air - only a respirator will be used?

I plan to go to tracotr supply to buy a $60-70 paint gun...any objections?

Sorry for the ignorance and stupidity...I have never painted with compressed air before...
Let the comments fly...

Thanks in advance!

A TSC gun would probably do the job but grizzly and northern tool have better guns for the price that you want to pay.

Without a supplied air system, what you don't do is add a 'hardener' to the paint. Hardener contains isocyanates. That's what messes up your lungs and circulatory system and can kill you. Try a wire brush on a 4 inch grinder to clean up the rusty areas and remove loose paint. Primer is a good idea, and a TSC gun can do good work. I set up my water filter and regulator with air line disconnects so I can plug it in the line close to the work.

Remember 2K primers, 2 part paints and clears are just as bad. Paint out side with a respirator or use a fresh air system.

I would check with grizzly tools and northern tools before i got a gun at TSC. >Link

Tractor supply (TSC) sells Tractor and Impliment paint which is what I would use to paint it. as for the rust i would try to get it sandblasted or take a wire brush over it and primer it if possible and yes this is a real good project for a first one . hope this helps
