Painting machined parts?

Hi,

I am renewing the front axle and steering of my 1978 Ford 3600 Diesel. While dissembling I noticed that the machined areas of the parts did not appear to be painted at the factory. I have removed the rust and am wondering if I should paint the parts to prevent them from rusting again. The machined areas are were the front axle support attach to the engine block and were the axle knees attach to the center axle. Also were the radiator support attached to the axle support. Is there any reason I would not want to paint these areas before assembly?

Thanks for your help.

Greyson

Hi Greyson; Not familiar with your model Ford but would say that any machined surface that mates to another to create as seal,or must move smoothly and requires tolerances for adjustment in assembly should not be painted. If I recall corrctly I have read that at the factory some parts were assembled on the tractor and then painted which would explain no paint on some machined surfaces. An example would be the axle support assembly being bolted to the block and the painted. If there is no need for close tolerances and you have found rust I don't think paint would do any harm.
