I searched and found that your 460's rear wheels are plated, presumable cadmium plated. I just bought a 240U and discovered under the yellow paint, my rear rims are plated as well. How are you planning to handle them? Will they stand up without painting? I'm trying to decide whether to clean off all of the yellow paint and leave them bare,or have them sandblasted and prime and paint them silver. Would appreciate your advice.

My neighbor painted his 460 rims silver after sandblasting. Still looks great after 17 years. He just bought a 240 a month ago and the rims on that are white...look good and appear to be factory.

When IH went to white wheels on the utilities, the rims and wheels were usually white. I believe this happened when the wheels were stamped steel instead of cast.

The 460 rims were galvanized, as were your 240's. I think IH switched to painted rims shortly after that. I sandblasted them and put PPG Omni acrylic urethane 8568 over PPG Omni MP 170 epoxy. 8568 is a GM rally wheel color. Sort of a silver gray. Looks good to me. There was no official color. Older galvanized coatings rust as the coating degrades, so you need to paint them.

Thanks for the replies. CNKS, I"ll follow your recommendation and have them sandblasted. I"ve used 8568 on my other tractors and really like the look.

So how"s that 460 coming?

At the moment it's stalled out as I'm in the process of moving, doubt if I get back to it before winter.
