I'm planning on painting my barn this year. I'll power wash and scrape off what old paintI can get. I don't klnow whether I'll be priming it or not, or if I'll be using oil base or latex. Does anyone have any recomendations on a sprayer, I want enough of a critter to be able to get the job done, without paying the same price as having it done for me.

thanks for any advice

O.K. so this is homeowner stuff but...
I have 2 Wagner Power Painter Pro's other than the paint cup going empty often it has reduced the time to paint a building drastically. It also comes with a backpack that holds about a gallon of paint, but I have not tried that part yet. (I can see me bending over to pickup something and dumping paint on my head.) The paint gun and cup is a bit heavy when you are hanging out from a ladder with you arm outstretched. Sure beats a brush though.

For $200 they make a unit that sits on the ground with a 35 foot hose, but going by the advice of someone at YTMAG who said it takes a lot of solvent to clean the 35 foot hose I got the handheld model.

The Pro model handled my oil based primer and latex top coat without needing to be thinned.

If you have an older Timber framed barn that is 3 stories high the paint cup refills could be tedious.

For oil based primer I have taken a liking to Valu Home Centers Infinity Exterior oil based primer. There are not too many oil based primers available.

I agree with glennster, rent one! They make the job so much easier. Just to add my two cents, if you want the paint to hold up a little longer primer. Before choosing a paint you'll need to consider what was on it before. As an example, latex does not adhere to well to enamel. Talk to you paint store guy for advice.

rent one of the commercial airless sprayers. they do a good job, and its a lot cheaper than buying one. they draw from a 5 gallon pail.
