I've used steel wool and I've also tried Krud Kutter from Wally World its a gel type of stuff in a squirt bottle you sray on and wash off its in the paint section, it work to an extend..even took the paint off my shed..but steel wool worked really good for me

I have found no easy way to do anything related to metal preparation. Some will tell you to use a rust converter. Others use electrolysis to remove it off of small parts. I prefer to sand or wire wheel it off.

I have been following the electrolysis line and I believe thats the best. It should be very easy to set up a small system(See archives). Small stuff I wire brush with my grinder and then I coat it with OSPHO, a rust converter to make sure I have no more rust. Had very good results that way.
