I used it a while back to strip paint and now I'm using it for something else. I was wondering how folks who have used this lye/water mixture, dispose of the 30 gallons or so after your done.

Thanks,

Took an agronomy course in college on herbicides and insecticides. Professor had a saying, " The solution to pollution is dilution" Pour it out on the gravel and run lots of fresh water over it.

Do a Google search and see what you think. The link is only one of many. Basically, small amounts (30 gallons obviously is not a small amount) can be poured down the drain with a large volume of water, larger amounts can be neutralized and disposed of. Lye is sodium hydroxide (NaOH). It can be neutralized with HCL, common name muratic acid. But, if I had 30 gallons of the stuff, I don't have a clue what I would do with it. I would probably dilute it and spray it out with a tractor mounted sprayer, but it will ruin the pump.

Contact your local high school chemistry teacher. He can confirm the expected results and get you some litmus paper. If you put the thirty gallons of NaOH (an alkaline)in a fifty gallon barrel and add muriatic acid; mix with a paint mixer until you get a neutral pH, you should be OK. JUST DON"T BREATH THE FUMES! If my 50 year memory is corect, you"ll get H2O and NaCl; easy enough to dispose of.

If you do follow the neutralization route, add the acid very slowly, and do not stand over the surface. The reaction is likely to be quite exothermic, meaning that it will get hot. If not well mixed it can superheat at the surface and spray back at you. Remember, caustic is used to remove the meat from bones. It will remove your skin, particularly if it is hot.

How about disposing at your local hazardous waste authority?
