On the back of the gallon of paint, it says to add no more than 1 part thinner to 8 parts paint. How much is one part? Any advice is greatly appreciated.

Hi Dalton,

It can be anything you want, depending on the total quantity to wish to wind up with - teaspoons, 8 oz drinking cups, pints, quarts, etc. The important thing to remember is that whatever measure you use, you mix at a ratio of 8 paint to 1thinner, at least for your particular paint. That means for 8 teaspoons of paint, you add 1 teaspoon of thinner to give 9 teaspoons of mixed paint. If you were using kitchen measuring cups as I do, it would mean you add 2 oz of thinner to 16 oz of paint for 18 oz of mixed paint - or 1 oz of thinner to 8 oz of paint for 9 oz of mixed paint. And so on. If you want to use the whole gallon of paint, you would add 1 pint of thinner to it. That would give you the 8 to 1 ratio since 1/8 of a gallon is 1 pint.
