I am trying to get John Deere green to paint smooth with out alot of orange peel. I mix to specs on the can (10-1-1). The first coat seems to do well, the second and third really brings the orange peel out. the horizontal places are not too bad, but the verticle spots are horrible. I am using an HVLP with about 12-15 psi. Any sugestions?

I have a turbine HVLP gun and I had problems with orange peel. After experimenting I mix paint exactly as instructed on can. I then fill my paint gun cup 3/4 full with that and fill rest of way with reducer. It works good for me.

I read that the psi instructions were for the pressure at the tip. There is a lot of loss in the gun. I'd go up to 35 psi at the inlet (your gauge) and try that. Must be something around there for a test panel.
What temperature are you spraying in? There are usually three level of reducer, slow, medium and fast. If it's hot, above 80 degrees, you need the slowest reducer.

John Deere paint is 8:1, I use acrylic reducer and hardener, I reduce 8:1 first then add the hardener 8:1, also I would get rid of the hvlp, (just my opinion) to fix the orange peel wait about two weeks and wet sand it with 400 then 600 and give it one more coat it should turn out like glass!

12-15 psi -- is that what is marked on the gun? Seems about half or less the recommended amount. Use the maximum pressure recommended by the manufacturer, use a gauge on the gun, not the regulator on the wall, if you have one.

The gun says max 15 psi I have a regulator mounted directly on the gun, I have change the regulator and the gun and get the same result with both. I can paint dupont just fine, base coat clear is no problem, and in the past I have had no problem with deere.

#16 in the link discusses orange peel. It is a PDF file so it won't appear immediately. The 10-1-1 ratio does not sound correct to me. Seems it should be more like 4:1:1, but the instructions on the can should be correct. But, I have never used alkyd enamel. Be sure you are using the recommended thinner or reducer, not the reducer you use with base-clear, in other words don't mix brands. If you can get good results with base-clear, and have used JD paint before in that ratio without problems, it sounds like you have gun problems, it looks like you have a new gun. 1st try using the maximum settings, pattern, fluid and air. At most you should not have to reduce the pattern and fluid more than about 3/4 turn.

I just painted my Farmall H using Case/IH 2150 red from the dealer. I used my new craftsman gravity HVLP gun. The paint didn't require any thinning, although I did put in just a splash of acetone.

I started painting at 1 in the morning as the temp/humidity was to high during the day. I got the best finish and gloss that I've had on anything then I've painted in the past.

Now, the downside was I had a few runs using the new gun. I fixed the runs the next morning (razor bladed them off) and went to repaint. I still had my gloss, but I've lost some of my mirrior finish due to some slight orange peel. Temp and humidity was back up at 1 in the afternoon when I did the repaint.

I tried thinning some but all I had was the acetone and it's not really the best reducer to combat temp and humidity.

If your not reducing or needing a thinner in your paint I would suggest you try to wait until the temp goes down and the dew has dropped. Might get a better quality finish. The type of gun your using has nothing to do with orange peel. It is a temp/humidity reaction. I have 2 HVLP's, (1 Binks siphon feed and this new gravity fed Craftsman) and 2 conventional guns (Devilbiss JGA and another Craftsman). I wouldn't go back after using HVLP and I really like the gravity gun. Uses ALL the paint in the cup, doesn't leave that little bit in the bottom.

In my case, it won't take much to respray using the HVLP gun so in a couple of weeks I intend to fine sand and shoot another coat, probably in the middle of the night again.
