Is there something that a person can do to the lug nut to keep it from rusting without having to put paint on it. As you know, wrenches knock off the paint.

To protect the paint (or chrome finish) wrap it in tape, then remove the tape after it's tight. Works pretty good most of the time.

Lug nuts were never painted to start with. The factory always plated them. No factory was going to take the time to paint a nut where the paint could gum up the threads, or where the paint could be damaged during installation. That"s why most hardware was plated on the tractor, with the only exceptions being that which was paited after assemlby. Factories never painted individual bolts or nuts, then installed them. No assemlby line would do that. In the old days it was usually silver cadmium plating. Today it is really really had to find anyone plating cadmium anymore due to the environmental unfriendlyness and EPA regs. You can easily do them in silver zinc though, which is what all the hardware store hardware is, and 98 percent of the people won"t know the difference. Zinc is a sacrificial metal. In other words it"s meant to corrode before the steel, thus prolonging the life of the part. If you take care of the zinc though, store tractor indoors climate controlled, keep it clean, and wax the plating once in awhile, it will remain new looking. I have all my zinc plating done at www.detailplating.com
You can also clear coat the zinc for a little extra protection, though most clears are usually not impermeable to moisture.

Lately I've been painting lug nuts, and wheel rim bolts with black Zero Rust paint, using a small brush. Has held up well to 6 point impact sockets, at least so far, and the black looks fine on the wheels. Plus you could touch it up if needed. But with regard to all of the other locations on the tractor, sure is frustrating when it chips off after spray priming and painting

Don't get flats. Seriously, I use cadmium plated nuts, correct or not. There is really no way to to protect something that a wrench is used on. You just have to touch them up each time they are removed.
