Just wondering what the going rate for a tractor paint job? I have a guy that disassembles, steam cleans, sandblasts, sands sheetmetal to bare metal, does very good body work, removes gauges, radiator, ect., primes and paints for $700 and I buy the paint. He said the paint and primer would be around $180- Is this in the ballpark? He does do very nice work. Thanks for your input!

For someone to degrease, sandblast, sand, prime, paint, disasssembly, assemble for $700.sound like a deal to me. Works out to about $2.00 an hour if done right.

the last tractors i painted i charged $900 for one with no loader and 1k for one with a loader i think they were JD utility tractors and that was using JD paint which is not expensive but not cheap, it seems to be of good quality and these are farm tractors so it made the most sense, this included all of the nessecary body work and multicolor painting and new decals and seat cushions. It a good bit of work but the difference is whether it is a farm tractor or a show tractor which would mean sanding out every little nic in the frame and castings, i think the man with these tractors go his moneys worth and thats my goal. at $700 and we'll say $300 of paint on the high side depending on quality this seems like a good deal but i would check on some of his other work and if its good then go for it, but please buy the fellow good paint, primer, thinner, etc since the quality of the job relies upon this and you could end up cussing him over your fault.

Hi Travis, I've spent the last month or so painting my 70 model 135. I've never held a spray gun before so some of the time was spent in trial and error. I didn't use the best paint, got dealer paint, $54 for red and $34 for the silver mist gray. Hardner was $17 a pint. Add $80 for spray guns. $10 or $15 for sand paper....what suprised me was how much thinner I used, mostly for clean up. Xylol at $11 a gallon, and have used 4 gallons so far. I don't recall how much the carbon resporator was...and I'm sure there was some other expenses I have forgotten...The guy at NAPA and I were talking the other day, he said a man could spend $600 or more for paint and supplies for some of the better paint. Knowing how many hours I have tied up in my paint job I'd say $700 is very reasonable if you get the kind of job your looking for. I'd go broke if I were a pro and worked for that kind of money. It's satisfing to stand back and look at the paint job and know I did it myself. I hope I can say that about the paint job in 5 years. That is really how I look at it, will the paint job hold up and look good several years down the road...I can't tell you how much I've enjoyed the project.....you might want to have a go at it yourself.....Bill in TN

It depends on the paint type.

But a decent quality but basic synthetic enamel will go for 75.00/gallon. Add in 60.00 for primer, throw in 25.00 for hardener, and 20.00 for reducer and you get: 180.00.

So his estimate is right.

700.00 for the labor is a fair price. It is a labor intensive and dirty job. Not to mention disposal of chemicals, hazardous materials, air born carcinogens, lung mucking overspray, equipment and rent...

To me, if i had the means...send it off. If you got a guy who does it right...go for it. Ask him if he uses zinc phosphate to neutralize any rust under the primer. A pre-primer is a good idea for all the expense...why have any rust working slowly and quietly away under your paint...then one day you begin to notice yellowing and rust coming through.
