I am using JD paint (low VOC) and tried cleaning it up with paint thinner and got nothing but a lot of cottage cheese. Any ideas on what I should use to clean up my gun? The paint is a synthetic enamel (at least as far as I know). I am using NAPA reducer and hardener (if that matters).

Thanks.

There are lots of products that can be called "paint thinner" including gasoline and linseed oil in some cases. What you need to do is buy a gallon of the "economy" laquer thinner sold in all auto parts stores and use it to flush your guns. If that doesn't cut it then you have let it sit too long with catylized paint in it (cottage cheese) or worse.

as soon as i finish spraying, dump any left over paint out of the gun. then put a 1/4 paint cup full of whatever reducer you used to thin your paint. gently shake the gun up to slosh it around inside the gun, then spray about 10-15 seconds of it thru the gun. dump the rest out into your reclcling can, then do it again. if you are using a siphon gun, be sure the cup is firmly on it, then cover the spray gun tip with a rag, tip the gun upside down and pull the trigger a couple times. this blows thinner out the vent hole. by now you should have almost all the color out of the gun, empty it out, refill with lacquer thinner, repeat process. pull the tip off, wipe all that down with thinner till its clean, remove cup gasket, clean that all up too. run a brush up thru the pickup tube, clean all passages out. when its clean, i leave the tip in the cup, add 1-4 paint cup full of lacquer thinner and store the gun that way.
