Tonight I removed the battery rack from my 8N, and I noticed the front of the tranny right under the battery is pitted from 58 years of battery acid leakage. What's the best way to repair this? Will bondo stand up to battery acid if it leaks again?

Hi Lance, You can fill the pits with bondo or a filler putty and then paint. Like the paint that covers it, it probably won't stand up to 60 years of battery acid. Since it is essentially hidden do you really need to fill the pits? Remember the trans is cast and therefore has a rough surface. If you fill the pits you'll create a smooth surface that is not natural and will be noticable. You might consider just cleaning it up with a wire wheel and good cleaner, paint with epoxy primer and top coat and let it go at that. Hope this helps.

Thanks for the reply. However, you first state that the area is hidden, but then go on to say if I make it smooth it will become more noticeable! Thanks, I'm thinking i'll do a little bondo or JB Weld.

If yuo do the bondo, just as it gets tacky, lay a piece of 80-grit sand paper across it and rub with your hand, carefull to not move the paper. Let cure.. peel paper back, and you will have a surface resembling the rough cast..

It should look better than a smooth surface anyway.

Hey Soundguy, that is a good idea. I was wondering how that might be done. Good info!

60 grit may even work better.. just smooth the paper into the bondo.. make sure the paper stays put..

Hi Lance, sorry for the confusion. It will still be somewhat hidden if my memory serves me right, but if someone is looking closely or they remove the battery box they see the nice smooth spot which would seem odd. With that said, you're the one that has to be happy. Either way you go is okay.
