I have had many C and B allis chalmers from 1939 to 1949 and they were all galvanized. I have had some that were orange when I got them but if you cleaned off a little paint they were galvanized underneath the paint. I think they were probaly all galvanized when they left the factory.

Hi,

By wheels, I assume you mean the rear rims and not the cast centers. The cast centers were the early version of AC Persian Orange. The rim color is a matter of significant argument. There are those that swear the rims of all Bs were galvanized (or silver colored). There are others (like me) that who don't believe it was that simple. For one thing there is notable evidence that both black and orange were used in addition to galvanizing. For another, I doubt very much that either AC or its' customers were that concerned with the rim color, especially during the war years where they were lucky to get any rims at all. I have seen some evidence from pictures of Bs that obviously had the original paint where the rear rims appeared to have remnants of orange. I have also seen old pictures of Bs where the rear rims were silver colored. The nice booklet that is for sale on this site titled "The Little ACs" has this to say about it:

"Colors for rear wheels varied over the years with the early models using black rims and orange for the wheels. The C and B were produced with orange rims for much of the 40s. With the advent of the WD, AC began to use Silver for the B and CA rear rims. This occurred at the start of the 50s. Based on our research, the C was never produced with silver rims. The original color of the CA eccentrics was orange. Lug bolt/nuts followed the color of the hub which was orange. In early attempts to paint the silver on the later machines rims, I found that standard silver had a tendency to become too powdery after drying. As one drove into a rut or furrow, this paint would simply brush off. I overcame this by using a more expensive high-temp silver designed for engine use."

Here's a picture of a 1940 B that appears to have all original paint where I believe there are remnants of orange on the rear rims. Here's a showroom picture of a 1939 B where the rear rims appear to be black. Here's a picture of my own 1942 B where I chose to paint the rear rims the early Persian Orange that AC used on the rest of the tractor. I have even heard about, but never seen, green being used for the rear rims. I suppose it depends on who supplied what to AC under contract and what was readily available at the time. I was at a show this summer where I met someone who was obviously an AC "collector" of sorts. He had many pictures of AC Bs and Cs over many years - but they all had been "restored" and repainted. I asked him about the color of the rear rims since all his pictures showed them to be silver. He absolutely insisted that AC never used anything but galvanized (silver) for the rear rims on either Bs or Cs. I didn't argue with him but I believe he was wrong to take such a hard position. So take your pick. In the end, paint them whatever color you prefer. That's what I did. I painted mine orange , not because I believed it was "original" but because I simply liked the appearance better.
