Inside Valve Cover?

The inside of the valve cover for the 240U I recently bought was pretty rusty, and now that I cleaned it up and treated it with Picklex20, I"d like to coat it with something. Anyone know how epoxy primer (MP 170), or POR15 or ZeroRust would hold up in such an environment?

Thanks

I think the very rusty interior of my valve cover is simply further evidence of the problem that caused one valve to sieze and several push rods to bend . . . lack of lubrication due to clogged rocker arm oil passeges. Perhaps it's just aesthetics, but after electrolytically getting all of the rust out of there, it would feel alot nicer to have a new surface in there, even though I'll likely never see it again. My concern? Just that an oily environment might lift or bubble the paint over time resulting in reclogging passageways, etc. You're right, I should just coat the inside surface with motor oil and put it back on to the reworked head.

Do nothing; if you run the tractor at all it will be covered in oil, thus no rust. Except for glyptal, don't use any kind of primer/paint inside an engine. Glyptal can be used inside a clean casting to prevent seepage thru the casting, it is not needed inside a valve cover.

Ok, how about a lesson. What problems would painting the inside of a rocker arm cover cause?
My cover was very rusted inside even though its been a running tractor. Will the paint chip off and cause problems. Just trying to learn. Thanks for any insight you can give.

I can't answer that question. Just seems strange to paint the inside of a tractor. I don't know if paint will chip off and cause problems or not, I just wouldn't take the risk. I haven't noticed any significant amount of rust inside any valve cover I have on my little used tractors. I don't pay much attention to such things when I work on them, just clean them up and go on. The only thing that would cause it is condensation, must not get much of that where I live.

I used Rustoleum primer on mine. Epoxy would also work as would the POR 15. POR 15 is very hard and adheres very well. I don't know how it would hold up in that environment though. Soundguys suggestion is a good one because I understand one of the applications is for the inside of engines. If I recall correctly there has been previous discussions about it, so you might check the archives
