I"m about to start priming and painting the bolt-on components for my '40 John Deere A. I have the case and frame rails complete. I use JD buff primer and enamel with hardener. While painting the frame rails, I completely primed and painted the 10 bolts that hold the rails to the case before I reattached. Even with my gentle wrenching to reatttach I chipped the paint on the bolts.

Any suggestions with the brakes, seat platform, radiator etc. Should I prime the bolts, attach, and come back with a small brush and paint over the fasteners? How are you guys putting the finishing touches on a long process.

Thanks.

Someone had said that they use black tape around the heads of the bolts when they install them. It may work for you. Tape is cheap too.

I have painted fastners heads, then attached parts, and then uses a touch up brush and non thinned ( but hardened ) paint.. usually turns out great.

On areas like lugnuts.. etc.. If i feel like pating for new hardware that's what I use..

Prep them before you install them and then brush on epoxy and top coat of choice after tightening. If you use the right brush and the paint is right consistency there will be no brush marks and it will look just as good as sprayed. It's one of them things most people overthink.

In the auto body trade, we'd paint where things were bolted on, without hardener. Then we'd install the parts, with their inner edges already painted. everything would look right, with no chipped, painted, bolt heads. Just before the main paint covering was done, we'd wipe any remaining paint off the area, do a final wash, and paint the area.
