It all depend on how cheap the paint you are buying is. The cheaper the paint the more solvent in it which makes it harder to cover. Most cheaper brands can take up to 8 coats to cover since most of the product is going in the air. A better paint will take 1 to 2 coats to cover even in yellow or orange. Generally you put enought coats on so you dont see the primer through the paint in any areas. This is where you get a apple to orange comparison, one paint might be 75$ a gallon and the other being 150$ a gallon, if the cheaper one takes 4 coats to cover and the more expensive paint takes 2 coats you did not save anything, in fact you spent more since you will use more hardner, reducer, and spent more time putting on wet coats that dirt and dust will stick too, plus more of a chance for runs or dry spray. Thats why I recommend buying a paint that is not a bargin, but covers very good.

A gallon should give you two coats.
